There were so many requests for a larger version of the Q concept that I have developed a plan for a 1500 square foot modern home or vacation home.
Please note that this is not a Q series designed by Kohn Shnier Architects. I am an architect as well and have been thinking about these issues for many years and submit my own work herein.
many of the ideas seen here are in other designs I have worked on at Royal Homes-
- a large "gear room" to store your stuff when you come in the door;
-open space with lots of glass;
large screened porches.
This is a split level home, because we include basements in our pricing and if they are out of the ground it becomes useable space at a very low cost.
Half a level down- a huge basement room that can be used for anything.
Half a level up- three bedrooms, two baths, all with windows and cross-ventilation.
here one can see in perspective (and a lot of shadow) that the living spaces are filled with light.
Except for the tiled area behind the wood stove, most of the wall is glass, with opening awning windows top and bottom.
In this version of the design, there are two bedrooms on the sleeping level after we realized that in a sidesplit design the basement is out of the ground and high enough that two bedrooms can go downstairs.
Note that the bathroom is divided in two- a small room for the toilet and sink, and a larger version for a japanese style soaking tub and separate shower.
The two boxes on either side of the stairs are closets for the bedrooms. I think there is probably enough height above them to span over the stairs and create a loft.
In this smaller version of the M 1500 the entry hall is tighter and the gear room is reduced to a closet- since the basement is only half a flight away we decided to put it downstairs. The Kitchen and living area remains large- 30 feet from edge of kitchen to end.
